Impact of Online Games

An "Online Game" which is a game played over some form of computer network. I believe that not only most teenagers but also many adults are quite familiar with it. According to my memory, my first "date" with online games was in 2001(in China). That was the year the word "online game" coming to my brain. I am not sure when online games entered into Singapore, but it should not be very far from China. Since that, online games have become more and more popular.

Today, I am going to talk about the negative impact of online gaming. We know that, some people play online games are to have fun, but a majority of players are addicted to games.

According the information found from the Internet; a significant number of respondents considered themselves to be addicted to the game. Female players below the age of 23 were more likely than male players of the same age range to consider themselves addicted to the game. There is the chart.

I also consider myself addicted to online games. When I am still in secondary school, class finished at 1330, once I got home I turned on the computer and started to play World Of Warcraft (a very famous online game) for more than 9 hours; if it were not for having dinner, I could played until 1 or 2 am on next day. During that time, I was extremely addicted to online game. I felt I got nothing to do other than play games. I have tried to quit, however, it was so hard that every time I saw computer; I could not control myself. There must be a lot of teenagers have the same experience. And there is a research on quitting the addition.

During that period, my academic result declined rapidly. I had been the top 5 in the class, since I was so addicted to online games, when term test came out, I realized that my position has drop to 10+. In the beginning, I did not think much of it and continued to play online game every day. At the end of the year, final year examination came; my position became 20+ already. I just knew that it was so serious. Some players brush this issue aside and trivialize it, arguing that gaming addiction cannot be as serious as substance addiction. Some players deny their own addiction by claiming "it's just a game". However, it’s not just a game, being addicted to game will surely affect your real life. It is just how much or how serious you have been influenced.

There are some real events happened. That's see how online gaming affect people.

2003, in China, a fifteen-year old boy was too addicted to online games, he killed his mother for just few dollars to go to Internet bar. It is amazing that, a fifteen-year old child could hold a knife to stab his own mother to death. And the motive seems to be so negligible.

In China, there is a guy, he flunked out the school and moved his "house" into a Internet bar, he has no bath and no clean cloth for more than 2 month. You can image that how dirty could he be. However, he was doing so was to see a "boss" of a online game to be killed. You may think he might be a psychopath, but there are a lot of people same as him in the world.

We can see that, gaming addition is so powerful that it can make people crazy-like drugs. Some people call "online game" as "electric-drug".

Appropriate gaming is good for us. Gaming can let us relax and enjoy, making us feeling happy and joyful. Being addicted to gaming is very different, in that situation, it is not people playing games but games are "playing" people.

Lastly, let me ask you a question you are playing or being played?

  5. Yes I agree, lucky I understand "评论". haha

I enjoy playing games during my teens. I remember I could play "counter strike" almost 4-6 hours a days. It seems addicted but i felt that is was thrill and fun.

I felt that play while you still can, when you are older, you would focus more on other stuff rather then fun anymore. Must have a balance between work , rest and play. IF you play and work , getting lesser sleep , you would become older, and your health and endurance would depreciate. Yon don't feel it now but in the next few years ...

    Cheers
    PLay with a balance!

  6. Yes i agree with Alan, we should play the game, instead of letting the game play us. I also agree with Jack that it was such a great time playing a game for several hours.
We should have fun when we're young, because eventually we'd be sucked into the fast-paced adulthood. However, I believe that even in adulthood, there are playtime too. Here's a prelude to my new media assignment: I will also talk about using new media gaming as an entertainment platform, and discuss about the stigma that ( being young=key to play).

Jack is very right in saying that there should be a balance between work, rest and play so as not to jeopardize the other areas of your life. Zi Hao probably overlooked this fact in his eager pursuit of games which resulted in deteriorating academic results. I was once in Zi Hao's shoes too, only at that time, I was much worse off. This would also be raised in my new media website.

The primary element of playing a game is knowing when to stop. It involves having the discipline to tell yourself that "enough is enough". It is also very interesting to know that there are more females than males who classify themselves as addicts. I'd rather view this phenomenon in another way though. I'd say the males probably couldn't admit the fact that they're addicted. This state of denial gives them a false sense of security that they're safe and can continue playing. So this could also explain why the females were comparably more successful in quitting gaming. This can be seen from the graph, that there were more unsuccessful attempts by males at quitting games than by females.

  7. To be honest, back in my secondary school days, the word "stop" was not in my dictionary.

As you can guess, my grades were horrendous.
I'm probably more disciplined now but I wouldn't know since I hardly play anymore online games.

Took me long enough to quit.
    Got played for years.

Well, it seems that teenagers are much more likely to be addicted to computer games than adults. I feel that the reason for this is we have too much time, (if we take away our time for studying). Unlike adults, we do not work for anybody and we seldom have a timeline to complete anything.

Also, I feel that teenagers often indulge themselves with online games as a way to escape from their stressful study life. By becoming someone else who is rich, popular or strong in these online games, they are in a fantasy of their own. A teenager could easily spend hours doing anything that they like even if it is not necessarily right.

I did not know addiction to online games could be so serious. Citing your example where a 15 year old boy killed his own mother just to go to the LAN shops, I feel that addiction can drive a person to do even the most cruel of things. Game addicton to me is like addiction to drugs. The more you play, the more you want to play afterwards.

I feel that these game sites should play their part by limiting the number of hours a person is online. Even though I am sure this will never happen, I feel that sites should have the responsiblity in tackling game addiction

  10. I was played, because I was like Ze Chuan, the word stop was non-existent in my world. Yes, I was like this until my O Levels. It is true that when someone gets addicted to playing games, they will resort to anything to continue playing, just like in the case of the young 15 year old chinese boy who stabbed his mother so he can go to an internet cafe.

Scary, on how addictive online games can have an impact on people.

  11. Games are virtual and your life is reality, you have a choice to make. Cut down and know your limit on games. afterall, its just a leisure. More important stuffs awaits us.

  12. We have to manage our time wisely. It is no good to have anything too much or too little just get the right amount. This can apply to everywhere in life. If you play too much of online games, you will most likely to neglect your other areas like school work etc.
Therefore, prioritise our time properly. Do not let the game control you if not you will end up GAME OVER in the game.

  13. I myself also addicted to gaming when i am in secondary school. Now when i think of what i am last time, i truly regretted.
You can play and study at the same time, however just dont let your heart of wanting to play game control your mind of studying if not when the time you come to school, you will always be thinking of games and not homeworks.

  14. Wow, I've never realised how serious online gaming addiction could be until I've read your blog. A 15 year old child killed his own mother just so that he could go to the gaming shop to play online games. What has our world come to?

Taking into account the seriousness of online gaming addiction, I think people should research on ways to prevent or "cure" this addiction. Life is meaningless if one is to sit in front of the computer for hours playing a game. It is completely unhealthy to live this inactive lifestyle. So what if you have defeated the "big boss" in the game? What do you win? Do you gain more wisdom? Do you gain money? Are you a better person? No, none of this is true. The only thing you will gain is a false satisfaction that doesn't translate into the real world. After your game, you still need to face reality and face real problems, and in the case of ZiHao, he has to face his declining academic performance.

What ways do you suggest that can help prevent or "cure" this addiction, Zi Hao?

One last note, I agree with Joey and Weiliang that prioritising and organising one's time wisely is very important. Know your limits and discipline youself so that you will not fall victim to such unproductive lifestyle that is gaming addiction.

  15. Gaming addiction is a serious matter nowadays.

Gaming addiction does not only affect your grades but it can also affect how you react to things.

Recently theres an article about a 19 year old boy, threw a taco at his mother face after she unplugged his Xbox.

Due to gaming addiction, alot of things can happen in the reality.

  16. I see that sometimes people get so engross in games, they tend to forget about what is happening around them. I am not a gamer myself so i can't really understand how addicted one can be when it comes to games. Thanks for sharing your personal experiences with us.

  17. I had a hard time looking for the comments link too!

I am shocked, how can you kill your own mother just so you can go online and play games?

I had friends who were addicted to gaming too. They would sit in front of the computer from the time they wake up, lunch and dinner was with the computer in front of them. I think it's senseless to spend so much time on games, I would rather go out with my friends! Whenever my friends talked about how far they have progressed in the games, I would roll my eyes and my mind starts to wonder.......

  18. Good information on topic. Such a concern for those who really could just play online games for hours and hours. Might be prone to have bad-eyesight and unusual pc-couch behaviorable changes and even may start to hallucinate by talking to the pc. Safety concern here. Don't over-do things the unhealthy way.
